Chapter XIV: Doctor Moreau Explains

Moreau explains that the humans he sees on the island are actually animal that he turned into human using vivisection. It is where he strips the animal of its skin (so that's why the animals cry so much) and then puts human skin grafts on them so the DNA will infuse with their animal DNA. The animals can talk, but they aren't perfectly human. Charles questions Moreau's ethics, but Moreau brushes that aside. Seeing as how he can trust them, Charles returns with them to his room where he takes a nap.
