Charles finds himself in a small untidy cabin with a youngish man holding his wrist. In turns out some people found him alone in the dingey. Charles ended up in a trader boat headed from Africa to Callao. He meets Montgomery, a man who introduces Charles to many of the crew on board

So the island does have civilization on it?
Charles actually does not find out about the island until the sixth chapter. There is some civilization on the island, but they are, in a sense, different.
