Charles awakes in the early morning finding the captain "cleaning his ship". It turns out anything that he considers "filthy" is being thrown overboard. The captain also seems to have kept his grudge against Charles. Even though he tries to go against the captain's wishes, Charles is thrown into his little dingey and left for dead in the middle of the ocean. He prays God will let him die then and there.
