The story starts off with the main character, Charles Edward Prendrick, in a sort of predicament. He is stuck with three other men on a dingey, or small boat, of the "Lady Vain". One of those men fell into the water and hit his heat on a piece of floating driftwood. Although the other men tried to pull the man up, the man never came up. A little while later, the other two passegers got into a fight, and accidentally rolled of the small boat and drowned in the water. Charles Prendrick was stuck in the dingey fo almost what seem to him an endless period. Soon, the water and food supply ran out, and Charles fainted. The chapter ends with Charles recollecting have some liquid being poured down his throat and seeing a dark face.
